The Hidden Light

A Blessing Untended · Part One: Civil Duty

E. Bradford Seckel

Just weeks ago, cities across France burned. In 2020, American cities burned. None of it happens overnight. It comes one quiet season at a time, when ordinary people, especially those who proclaim Christ, stop keeping watch over who governs us. The Hidden Light looks at that quiet season, the old sin of not caring for the blessings we have been given, and the gift we are leaving in the ground — making way for others to take it up and use it to destroy the very thing it was given to protect.

American believers in Christ Jesus have been given something most people in history never had: the power to choose our leaders. Leaving it unused is slothful. It is acedia, and it is the servant who buried his talent in the ground. Don’t bury it. Don’t disregard such a blessing. A field left untended does not stay empty. Someone else plants it.
